Best Lawyers is proud to announce the expansion of Best Law Firms into Canada, marking a significant milestone in our global growth strategy. With a reputation for excellence and commitment to delivering exceptional legal awards, Best Law Firms is poised to bring our vetted research process, refined over 15 years, to Canadian clients.

The decision to expand into Canada was made carefully and reflects our commitment to serving clients globally. For almost two decades, Best Lawyers has awarded individual excellence in Canada. Our history in this market, paired with our established relationship with both firms and clients make Canada an obvious destination for our holistic firm awards. As one of our most engaged global regions, we are excited to work with firms during the research, which will commence in a couple of weeks.

On May 13, 2024, Best Lawyers will begin outreach to Canadian-based law firms eligible for recognition in Best Law Firms. Firms are invited to participate in the research process if they have at least one lawyer included in the individual professional excellence awards released in the 2024 edition of The Best Lawyers in Canada™. Research Submission Packets will be sent to firms that meet these criteria.

The packets include three main components for participating firms:

  • A practice areas and legal jurisdiction list noting the specific rankings a firm qualifies for evaluation for in the Best Law Firms – Canada rankings.
  • A Law Firm Survey for the firm to fill out, intended to capture information about the firm’s work over the past year and to learn more about what sets the firm apart from its competitors.
  • Client/Professional Reference Submissions, which are the names of clients and other professional contacts associated with the firm who can speak on its behalf, showcasing the strengths of the law firm via a brief survey.

The full research methodology and a FAQ page can be accessed online, along with the research timeline, for a more detailed look at the entire research process.

A Brief History of Best Law Firms

Founded in 2010, Best Law Firms’ mission was to honor law firms with exceptional talent by practice area and region. Through a truly grassroots, wholistic submission process, which considers not only a firm’s work but also an honest evaluation from former clientele, Best Law Firms became one of the top legal rankings in the US. The methodology and awards system has successfully highlighted legal talent across the country for fifteen years, with to date, more than 16,000 U.S. law firms ranked in the 2024 edition of Best Law Firms.

In 2023, Best Lawyers expanded the Best Law Firms awards internationally, beginning with research efforts in Australia. This research has concluded and we are excited by the upcoming public release of Best Law Firms – Australia on May 30, 2024. Last month, expansion continued with the announcement of research beginning for the upcoming Best Law Firms – Germany awards. Research efforts began last month and are underway.
